If you and your children visited the Petrosains in KLCC, Kuala Lumpur, you must be interested in visiting this place in Perak!

The Geological Museum is an education and learning centre for geology and geosciences located in Ipoh, Perak. It has been around since 1957, when the late Sultan of Perak, Sultan Idris Shah ibn Raja Iskandar Shah, laid the building’s first stone. It is part of the Department of Mineral and Geoscience Malaysia (JMG) complex.

When you walk into the museum for the first time, you will be amazed by how it is set up. The exhibition is split into seven zones, from A to G. Each zone has its own easy-to-understand storyline that will help you learn about geology. It starts with the structure, features, and history of the earth’s geology, as well as different geological specimens and how they are used, mineral mines and exploration, and how they will help people.

Other than Ipoh, JMG has two other geological museums, which are in Kuching, Sarawak, and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

During your visit, you will see a unique collection of geological stones, such as 150 rocks, 600 minerals, more than 200 precious and semi-precious gemstones from Malaysia and other countries, and dinosaur fossils. The museum also has a display of interesting cassiterite (tin) samples found in the Kinta Valley tin mine, as well as dioramas of different mining methods that are now part of the country’s history.Â

Not only that, but this museum also uses models and 3-D graphics to show how geology helps society, especially in building major infrastructure, developing groundwater resources, and promoting Malaysia’s geological heritage as a tourist attraction.

The best part is that this museum isfreeto enter! Their visiting hours are shown in the table below:
