The National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) is a community that focuses on giving education, welfare and protecting the autistic people in Malaysia. One of the branches is located in Alor Setar, Kedah promoting Early Intervention Program and Pre-Vocational.

It was formed by a group of parents and professionals back in 1986 that aims to give lifespan services for autism people through a variety of programmes that emphasize on skill acquisition and behavioral adjustments – evolving into results-oriented.Â

For those who did not know, autism is a complex developmental disability that usually appears during the first three years of life due to a neurological condition that impairs brain function. It occurs as many as one in 68 newborns. Because of how common this is, NASOM is committed to identifying and accepting people with autism, by protecting them, giving education and welfare, willing to spread awareness and become a useful resource for others who want to learn about this disorder.

The services that NASOM offers for autistic folks are Early Intervention Programme, Intensive Intervention Programme, Pre-Vocational Programme, Vocational Programme, Residential Programme, Assessment and Diagnosis, and Therapy Programme. These courses will ensure that autistic people can develop various life skills, be able to equip tools to do activities, have the opportunity to live independently, and have counseling and therapy.

Autistic people are more creative and passionate than normal people, and they do not show any violent or harmful behavior.

Not only that, NASOM also provides assistance in diverse areas especially for children with autism such as fundraising, support groups, collaboration with academic institutions on autism research and many more – in order to keep these children protected and well-developed.Â

NASOM hopes that with diverse services offered, the public can volunteer to help these children with autism in achieving and supporting their goals in life as well as understand how autism people function differently compared to normal human beings.

If you have a child with autism and lives in Kedah, you are welcome to join NASOM’s family! You can also check out their website athttps://www.nasom.org.my/ to find out more information and other centers across Malaysia.
